Wake boats are designed specifically for watersports activities such as wakesurfing and wakeboarding. As a result, they usually incorporate several features meant to maximize and even shape the boat’s wake. If you’re interested in learning more about how to create the best possible wake using your wake boat, check out this guide from Gordy’s Marine.

Speed

Watersports usually require that you drive your boat at between 20-25 MPH. If you go slower than 20 MPH, your wake probably won’t be large enough to ride, and if you go faster than 25 MPH, your wakeboarder or wakesurfer might not be able to keep up. Luckily, most wake boats have a cruise control function that you can activate once you’ve hit your ideal pace. However, keep in mind that turning can disrupt your wake, so drive your vessel as straight as you can to produce a more stable wake.

Trimming Your Engines

Trimming your wake boat’s engines will cause the bow to rise and the stern to go deeper into the water. This results in a larger wake. However, over-trimming your boat’s engine will make the wake too steep to ride or too close to the boat. If you do choose to trim your wake boat’s engines, be very careful as you adjust things.

Weight Distribution

Weight distribution plays a huge role in determining what kind of wake your wake boat creates. Some boats have built-in ballast systems meant to help make bigger wakes. If your wake boat lacks this system, you can still create a bigger wake by inviting more passengers or using weights (assuming your vessel’s floor is sturdy enough to handle them). However, you need to be careful about how you add weight to your vessel. Uneven weight distribution will result in an uneven wake, so be ready to adjust things as needed.
