While very similar to each other, pontoons and tritoons couldn’t be more different from other boat models on the market. However, while they have a lot in common, there are still a few key differences you need to be aware of before you decide to purchase one of these unique boat models. To learn more about tritoons and pontoons, their similarities, and their differences, be sure to check out our article below.

Size

While both tritoons and pontoons are sizable boats, tritoons tend to be a bit larger than pontoons on average. As a result, they’re often more stable and better suited to handle rough waters. However, due to both their increased capacity and the powerful engines required to propel these large boats, tritoons are often much more expensive in upfront and long-term expenses.

Buoyancy

Pontoons and tritoons both use a unique buoyancy device to help keep them afloat in the water. However, due to their size, a pontoon only has two of these devices, while a tritoon has three. Thanks to their increased buoyancy, tritoons are often a bit easier to maneuver—although their large size would likely overwhelm a new boater.

Use

While tritoons and pontoons both support the same general water activities, they don’t often travel in the same places. Because of their large size, tritoons often struggle to maneuver around the sharp bends and tight spaces that are common in lakes and rivers. Pontoons, however, have no such issues and are a popular model for freshwater boaters. Tritoons, on the other hand, are often better suited for shallow ocean waters or very large lakes.
