What YOU missed last weekend at Gordy's
Forklift Crossing was no doubt the busiest street in Fontana this weekend. A Fontana police officer arrived at Gordy’s to set up the barricade for the boat crossing on Friday night, and stayed later to chat with two little boys who dreamed of being police officers. The officer showed them his badge and let them help adjust the barrier till it was just right. Both parties parted with smiles on their faces. A perfect end to the start of the weekend.
Each morning brought with it a sparkling scene of glimmering water and a cloudless blue sky, promising good weather and a great lake day. As temperatures rose and a balmy heat blanketed Lake Geneva, people couldn’t wait to get outside. All day long, customers could be seen hauling YETI coolers through the park, towards the lakefront. A ripple of murmurs surfaced, from newcomers asking, “Is Gordy’s this way?” to veterans debating the best drink orders.
Gordy’s rentals went like hot cakes. The pier kids kept busy, donning straw sombrero hats as they dashed to and from to gas up the steady stream of boats and outfit them with tubes and waterskis. But, while a pattern of boats, kayaks, paddle boards, and more could be seen shuffling down to the lake, cooling off while staying dry was also an option. The Surf Shack made a mountain of moola this weekend off their frozen sweet treats. Families gladly took refuge underneath one of the Shack’s umbrellas to cool off with their ice cream, and soon the picnic benches were packed with happy customers enjoying some scoops while people-watching and vibing with the friendly sounds of the waves splashing against the shore.
Meanwhile, the lakefront saw its fair share of bikers ambling through. The big rock by the big Gordy’s chair played host to some little kids who climbed atop it and then lounged across its smooth, shimmering surface, suntanning like little chameleons. A bridal party, clad in pale blue-gray dresses (and one white!) promenaded through, clinching a picture on the big Gordy’s chair before the big moment. A few hours later, the ceremony took place in the park next to Gordy’s, attracting a giddy crowd of Gordy’s customers to see the happy couple married.
Seating at the Shore Shack was, once again, full by noon. The temperature outside was perfect for outdoor dining, the heat wrapping around you in a warm hug. By one o’clock, the lakefront swelled with island melodies, courtesy of Caribbean Eclipse Steel Drums. Tropical beats were plunked out by way of giant xylophone and the beating of a bowl-shaped drum, engulfing Gordy’s in an easygoing island of paradise. Back at the Boat House, people were jockeying for Adirondacks so they could kick their feet up and enjoy some ice cold beverages. There was a crush of customers sitting inside the Boat House as well, savoring the live music and delicious lake food while enveloped in the refreshing AC. In the park, the sun shone down on picnickers all day. Those who couldn’t cinch a spot at the restaurant came prepared, ordering carry-out instead and enjoying their food atop vast plaid picnic blankets.
On top of the awesome weather, a beautiful lake, and the perfect place to enjoy the two, customers had something else to celebrate this weekend: the Bucks win! More than a few Giannis jerseys were spotted, and the pride of spirited patrons and employees was contagious. In other local sports news: a girls lacrosse team and a boys baseball team both enjoyed their post-game celebrations at Gordy’s this weekend!
Sunday settled down as the sun’s rays began to recede across the water. Eventually, picnickers paid their leave, customers finished their drinks, and families packed up their YETIs and grabbed some scoops of ice cream for the road; everyone looking tanner and happier than when they arrived.
Straw sombrero hats off to Gordy’s for another weekend well done.
