Weekend Recap
The Packers may not have snagged a victory this past Saturday, but that certainly does not mean Gordy’s wasn’t able to clinch a winning weekend. Nothing short of perfect summer weather came to stay, with the temperature clocking in between 80 and 90 degrees and a soft breeze penetrating the stubborn humidity.
Morning at the lakefront dawned beautifully; the invigorating aroma of coffee mingling with the fresh lake air. The regular weekend queue of boats began to grow, snaking alongside the marina. A little girl in pigtails sat up high, atop the driver’s seat of an electric blue Axis. As the car lurched forward, pulling the boat, she leaned forward, shrugging her shoulders, her hands clamped around the wheel, emitting shrieks of giggles as she pretended to drive.
The lake inspires activity both on the water and off. Whether it’s a boat or your stomach, Gordy’s is ready to help you refuel when it’s time. The gears of the Surf Shack began spinning bright and early Saturday morning. Large families staked their claim on picnic tables; little kids greedily slurped their Capri-Suns. A chalkboard propped up outside the shack exuberantly declared: “We are open! Dogs welcome!”. Thus, the small beach side-by-side with the outdoor seating area saw a lot of activity this weekend as customers splashed through the water with their dogs while waiting for their food.
The Surf Shack’s mouthwatering summer eats prove that it’s never too early for the fare that reminds you just how good life can get. As early as 11:30, hot dogs piled high with relish, dripping with ketchup and mustard, surrounded by a sagging bun, and nestled on a bed of crispy French fries made their way to picnic benches holding hungry customers. And, of course, following the coveted cuisine was ice cream. Do you ever find yourself torn between ordering your ice cream in a cup or a cone? Never fear! The Surf Shack offers their splendid signature alternative: a cup of your favorite flavor topped with an upside down cone, finished with a spoon sticking out of the scoop. You still get all the yum from a cone without the risk of experiencing a tragic mess of your melted dessert on a hot summer day. For people in a hurry, the Surf Shack’s usual lickety-split service was put to good use as customers ordered carry-out, took a seat on the bench outside, only to pop up moments later with their food, the big plastic carry-out bag leaving a trail of heavenly scents in its wake.
The forklift had its hands full this weekend, giving lucky boats a chance to feel what it’s like to fly and allowing customers a glimpse at some dazzling vessels before their deposit into the water. The lift's steady rumble also acted as a bass for the afternoon musical guests, Ben Janzow and Jackie Ernst, who’s rousing renditions of favorite summer songs makes you want to learn how to play the guitar.
School and sport pride was spotted all over the lakefront this weekend. A teenage girl was wearing a well-loved Chicago Blackhawks t-shirt and a middle-aged woman blinded in a bright yellow Iowa Hawkeyes tank. An older man wore blue Michigan swim shorts polka dotted with maize block Ms and fans of the Chicago Bears broke out their attire in a show of support from Saturday’s win.
A family of four parked their matching blue bikes right outside the Shore Shack and took a welcome rest around a shaded table. A baby in a bucket hat sitting in a high-chair gazed with a glowing smile at the pretty water. At a nearby table, a man scarfed down his Greek Chicken Quinoa Salad, which looked so good that even his golden retriever was eyeing it, patiently waiting for a bite. Some husbands and wives power-walked together, while other couples moseyed down the crossing arm in arm, comfortably enveloped by the sunshine, enjoying the lake view, and perhaps side-eyeing the famous Flagship Nachos as they passed.
Customers quickly filled up the Adirondack chairs, savoring glasses full of shimmering golden beer while waiting for a table at the Shore Shack. Streaks of red frequently sped by; Gordy’s employees running out plates piled high with hot food and heaving big buckets of ice out to the bar.
Back in the Boat House, tables were pushed together to accommodate sprawling parties kicking back in the air conditioning. The bar area swelled with sports fans swapping out the Olympics with football season.
Boats aren’t the only good-looking vehicles you can find at the Gordy’s lakefront. The Pro Shop’s parking lot remained packed from as early as 10 in the morning to late in the afternoon. Included in the list of notable vehicles is a polished white jeep with red tires, a glossy red motorcycle, a shiny white golf cart, and a red and black Slingshot.
Per usual, a vast array of colors garnished the cobalt blue lake. Brightly colored tubes and wakeboards were shouldered back and forth between the marina and the piers. Lifejackets flushed bold shades of red, yellow, and blue were strapped around excited kids as they careened by the crossing, out onto the piers, and finally into a boat and off into the big lake beyond for a fun day of summer adventures.
Kids and parents took a break from their screens, sharing in quality time together while soaking in the beautiful sights and sounds of the lakefront. Offering experiences to bring people closer together and delivering on the promise of a good time is the Gordy’s goal each and every weekend- and a sure way to guarantee that everyone feels like a winner.
